Short Tall Tales and Creature Creation at the Banff Library for Alberta Culture Days

“Short tall tales by Entangled Puppetry
Where: Banff Public Library, 101 Bear Street, Banff, Alberta T1L 1H3
When: Saturday September 27th, 11am
What: Join Entangled Puppetry as it brings a twist to some of your favourite tall tales and once-upon-a-times. The Cosmic Dragon lives in the library and reads all the books. The only trouble is that he knows so many stories that he starts to get a little confused and gets the adventures all mixed up. His rollicking tales will transport you to a wacky world inhabited by pig princes, musical trolls, and unlikely heroes. Delightful for kids and adult alike!

Creature Creation: Puppet Building Workshop with Entangled Puppetry
Where: Banff Public Library, 101 Bear Street, Banff, Alberta T1L 1H3
When: Saturday September 27th, 2pm
What: Flex your creative muscles with Entangled Puppetry as we create simple and delightful hand puppets. In this 1 ½ hour family workshop everyone will have the opportunity to build and decorate their own puppet and bring their creations to life. Find out what you can create when you let your imagination run wild! Please ensure children under 12 are accompanied by an adult.

What: With an eclectic and imaginative style, this collection brings together puppets from various productions created by Entangled Puppetry. Inspired by natural landscapes, ancient folk tales, and found objects, the artists are able to breathe life into their creations. Entangled Puppetry uses varied materials and techniques to produce original and captivating characters. Although designed to be animated, when the puppets are viewed as sculptural pieces their limitless potential to captivate and inspire the imagination is realized. Come visit this world where anything is possible and let your imagination be inspired to reach its full potential. An enchanting experience for all ages.

You are a puppeteer! Can you say, that at one time or another, as child or adult, you brought a doll, stick, shadow or empty beer can to life, with a voice and identity? Simple, beautiful, joyful and yet incredibly complex, the humble art of puppet theatre breaks through creative boundaries. Elements of drama, storytelling, dance, music, visual arts and ritual combine in this ancient and ever expanding art form. Participants will explore the creative art of puppet theatre through exercises in physicality, discovering character, improvisation, crafting story and puppet manipulation, design and building. In an art form where the boundaries are as limitless as our imaginations, there are no right or wrong answers, only wildly creative alternatives. This day promises deeply imaginative fun and frivolity!

Facilitator: Tangle Caron is a performer, puppeteer, musician, environmental educator, napper, snacker and Lady Adventurer. Currently, she is a puppeteer for Mountain WHIT, Canada Park's professional theatre troupe, co-director of Entangled Puppetry and a founding member of The Found Object Puppetry Collective. She has had the great fortune to study with Bread and Puppet Theatre and at the Banff Puppetry Intensive presented by the Old Trout Puppet Workshop. Tangle believes joy is an essential part of the creative process and is prone to fits of exuberant silliness, which she is pleased to have harnessed into a viable career.
